Aims of the Internal Medicine Ward of the University Hospital of Heraklion

The Internal Medicine Department of the University Hospital of Heraklion has a long history of decades of contribution to the society of Heraklion, Greece, but also in Crete and the South Aegean, as it is the only Internal Medicine Department of a tertiary hospital in the jurisdiction of the 7th Health Region and also in the South Aegean. Since September 2020, the director of the Internal Medicine Department is Diamantis Kofteridis, Professor of Internal Medicine-Infectious Diseases at the Medical School of the University of Crete, Greece while the previous directors were Achilleas Gikas, Georgios Samonis, Dimitrios Boubas, Nikolaos Tsaparas, Dimitris Emmanouil, Nikolaos Siafakas, and Orestis Manousos.

The aims of the Internal Medicine ward are the provision of high-level clinical care in the field of Internal Medicine, which practically includes the entire range of diseases of the hospitalized patient, the education of undergraduate Medical students, postgraduate and doctoral students, Internal Medicine residents, as well as Infectious Diseases fellows. Additionally, the Internal Medicine Department participates in international studies through international collaborations, either purely for research purposes or in the context of clinical trials for new drugs. Through these participations, the Internal Medicine Department is a cutting-edge Department in Infectious Diseases, Diabetes Mellitus, Atherosclerosis, and Metabolic diseases.
